Our Story: The History of Jagersbosch Community Centre
Over 35 years ago, the seeds of the Jagersbosch Community Centre were sown through the vision and determination of a caring community. Today, we are proud to serve over 1,200 members with modern facilities, a dedicated team of permanent employees, and a vibrant spirit of togetherness. Our journey is a testament to what can be achieved when a community thinks, plans, and works together proving that with passion and unity, even the impossible becomes possible.
Humble Beginnings
In August 1986, a small group of concerned residents from Stilbaai gathered to address the growing needs of their senior citizens—services like blood pressure monitoring, bed-care, and nutritious meals were in high demand. By July 1987, the Seniors Club was established, and membership quickly flourished, highlighting the urgent need for a dedicated space.
A Home for the Community
Recognizing this need, Mrs. Anthea Rossouw—who had previously founded a community care centre in Oudtshoorn—was invited to assist. In October 1987, the Still Bay Municipality offered an erf with a dilapidated farmhouse, the historic Jagersbosch, once home to Mr. Phillipus de Jager (“Flippie Platbosch”) from 1871 to 1954.
In August 1988, the Municipality officially donated the 140-year-old Jagersbosch property to the community. Restoration advice was sought from the National Memorial Council, and local ex-engineer Mr. Roland Rudd drew up plans, believing much could be accomplished by the members themselves. Remarkably, the volunteer team had an average age of 71!
Building Together

In April 1988, thirty senior citizens began restoring Jagersbosch. Through incredible dedication and teamwork, the Community Centre opened its doors on 15 August 1989, and was officially inaugurated by Dr. J. Pieterse of the Department of Health and Welfare on 27 October 1990. The restoration of the outbuilding, Die Waenhuis, was completed in 1992.
Growing Our Impact
Inspired by Jagersbosch’s success, Mr. Moses Kleinhans of Melkhoutfontein and Mrs. Rossouw collaborated to establish a similar centre in Melkhoutfontein. With support from the community, the National Economic Forum, and local businesses, the Soeterus Care Centre opened on 5 June 1995.
In October 1998, Jagersbosch Community Care Centre became an independent Section 21 welfare company, ensuring its sustainability and growth. Die Waenhuis was upgraded in 2006, and in 2007, the Hessequa Municipality donated two historic beach cottages—Urheim and Friedensheim—to Jagersbosch. Urheim served as a charity shop until 2024, while Friedensheim continues to operate as a clinic.
A Legacy of Love and Support
From its humble beginnings to its status as a cornerstone of community care, Jagersbosch Community Centre stands as a beacon of what can be achieved through unity, perseverance, and love. The communities of Stilbaai, Jongensfontein, and Melkhoutfontein have shown that with little money but boundless heart, dreams can be built—and lives transformed.
We invite you to join our story, celebrate our heritage, and help us to continue making a difference—together.
